Coaching and its roots in Socrates' midwifery method.-Sofia Banagi

Coaching and its roots in the midwifery method of the Greek philosopher, Socrates.

Today everyone is talking and looking everyday to try and do Coaching.

Coaching comes from and has as its starting point the midwifery art of Socrates. For his time he was a pioneer and we still see today the influence of his obstetric method.

The Greek philosopher is one of the great personalities whose work has left history. Socrates was born in 470 BC, you understand how open-minded he was and how far-sighted for his time.

Socrates sought to awaken his fellow citizens and bring them out of their intellectual lethargy. Its purpose was to awaken people to open their horizons and acquire a meaningful life. That is, he put people through a series of questions to worry spiritually and mentally, so that they could learn to give solutions to their problems.

Socrates, like every human being, practices the specific art-method-science through questions, tests others but primarily confronts himself.
The dialectical method, as they called it, he practiced with face-to-face conversation and with a series of questions he troubled people, reborn them (midwifery) in essence for a better present and a more substantial contact with their Existence. The discussion proceeded with the method of questions and answers. With the intelligent questions he asked his interlocutor, Socrates drew conclusions and reformulated them, thus bringing to light the thoughts of his interlocutor. This dialogue was aimed at correcting, reconstructing and developing a new way of thinking and mentality.
As every change, small or big, brings to light fear of change and pain for what we may have believed to be true or for things that we must leave behind to make room for the new, for the new birth as our Greek philosopher argued.

As one can understand, Socrates' Midwifery is not just an art but an important invention that occupied his time and continues to be affected and strengthened over the years. His method pushed his students to uproot the knowledge they had and try new ones for their own happiness and well-being.

Today Coaching takes the lead and reminds us of our heritage. The main goal of Coaching sessions is to help the coachee gain awareness of his thoughts, behavior and the results it has. It supports the learner in the change and empowerment needed to deal with the situations that trouble him successfully. Coaching helps in all aspects of human life. The benefits of this alliance for the mentee are many, since through this unique process he gains self-awareness, becomes stronger and frees himself from the limiting patterns he maintained. It gives meaningful solutions and helps to achieve every situation.

Every person needs a Coach because every person needs someone to listen to them without judging them. Coach sees things from a distance and tries to be objective. This helps you because you understand the reality of each situation and can have a different approach.
The success of the Coaching session is due to both parties.
